A COMMUNITY WHERE LEARNING BEGINS WITH PLAY

Amherst Nursery School (ANS) is a non-profit, non-denominational, private cooperative preschool offering classes for two-, three-, and four-year-old children. Rooted in the belief that young children learn best through exploration and connection, ANS provides a nurturing, play-based environment where families are valued as essential partners in early education.

Our dedicated classes are led by experienced preschool teachers and supported by teacher aides under the guidance of an on-staff Education Director. Together, they create a warm, engaging space where each child’s development is supported at their own pace.

A True Cooperative Experience

As a cooperative school, ANS invites parents and caregivers to actively participate in their child’s early education. Families contribute in meaningful ways—by assisting in the classroom, helping with school operations, attending meetings and events, and serving on our Parent Board of Trustees. This unique model strengthens the bond between home and school while fostering a close-knit, supportive community.

Accreditation and Standards

Amherst Nursery School meets or exceeds high standards in every aspect of operation, including:

  • Building safety and facilities

  • Educational equipment and materials

  • Fire and health regulations

  • Teacher qualifications and child-teacher ratios

  • Curriculum development and classroom programming

Our commitment to excellence ensures a safe, enriching environment where children can thrive emotionally, socially, and academically.

Our History

The roots of Amherst Nursery School go back to 1938, when a group of local mothers and a young teacher formed a “study group” to better understand early childhood development. What began as a space for shared learning soon evolved into Western New York’s first cooperative nursery school.

Initially held in the homes of teachers and parents, the school quickly outgrew these humble beginnings. As enrollment grew, ANS moved from the Williamsville Methodist Church to Amherst Community Church, and finally to its current location in 1967. In 2008, the school officially became Amherst Nursery School, but its cooperative spirit—and commitment to family involvement—remains as strong as ever.

Today, ANS continues its proud tradition of offering young children a joyful, community-driven start to their educational journey. Parents, grandparents, extended family members, and caregivers are all welcome to share in the experience—just as they have for generations.
